Google phone strategy takes off

Google Inc has won a seat at the smartphone table.

Two years after the Web search leader announced its plan to barge into the market, a dozen phones are using Google’s Android mobile operating software, including Motorola Inc’s heavily promoted Droid phone.

And software developers have created more than 12,000 games and other applications that run on Android phones, second only to the 100,000 apps on Apple Inc’s iPhone.

“This is a platform that a lot of people were very sceptical about and it’s just exploded,” Brigantine Advisors analyst Colin Gillis said about Google’s Android.

But Google’s success getting handset makers and wireless carriers to adopt its free smart mobile phone software has not yet translated into a material benefit to finances.

Unlike Nokia or Research in Motion, which make money from hardware sales, Google is looking to prominently place its software and services on a new breed of mobile devices and gain direct access to valuable consumer data that can be used to sell ads for premium prices.

This month, Google announced the US$750 million (RM2.5 billion) acquisition of AdMob, whose technology and network allow ads to be placed on mobile websites and within iPhone and Android apps.

Google, which recorded about US$22 billion in revenue in 2008, doesn’t break out its mobile ad sales or disclose how its rates for mobile ads compare to traditional online ads.GOOGLE G3 MOBILE PHONE

“I think we’ll start to notice it at the end of 2010, and it will be really material in five years,” Gillis said of the impact of the mobile business on Google’s overall financial performance.

APP DEVELOPERS KEY

Despite Google’s success so far, it still has a long way to go to challenge the iPhone’s dominance of the market.

Analysts say the variety of phone makers producing Android phones could result in a less consistent product than competitors like the iPhone and Palm Inc’s Pre, in which the hardware and software are tightly integrated.

Avian Securities analyst Matthew Thornton said Google’s biggest challenge will be to ensure that a surge of Android phones from different vendors doesn’t create a potential for incompatible apps, which would turn developers off.

“They want the broadest audience, the most developers they can get on that platform,” Thornton said.

French mobile games company Gameloft said yesterday that it and other software developers were cutting back investment in developing games and other apps for Android, mostly due to the weakness of its application store.

“It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android, nobody is making significant revenue,” said Gameloft finance director Alexandre Rochefort.

Media reports have suggested that Google is building its own device to sell directly to consumers. This could give it greater control of its smartphone strategy, but could threaten relationships with hardware partners like Motorola.

Google Engineering Vice President Andy Rubin, who oversees Android development and strategy, told Reuters the company has already taken an active role in developing some Android phones such as the HTC G1 and the Droid.

He described reports of a Google-manufactured phone as rumour and speculation.

“We like working collaboratively with our partners,” Rubin said, when asked if it made sense for Google to get into the hardware business. “We don’t necessarily want to acquire the expertise to take over ownership of the design of hardware. We’re a software company.”

NOT UNIFORM

Google hopes it has gained an advantage with its recently released Google Maps Navigation, which provides real-time, turn-by-turn driving directions and weaves in unique features like the company’s archive of street photographs.

But the navigation app only works on smartphones with the 2.0 version of Android — like Droid — and not on the china phones on the market. This highlights the lack of a uniform Android experience for consumers and developers to rely on.

Google’s Rubin said the variety of Android systems is no different than the situation in the PC market, where multiple versions of Microsoft Corp’s Windows exist.

Google has procedures and incentives in place to ensure that apps are compatible on different Android phones, he said.

And while Android doesn’t have nearly as many apps as the iPhone, Rubin said Android will stand out for the functionality of its apps, rather than their sheer quantity.

“Does it have every different type of application to slice and dice and all that squeaky toys and stuff that’s out there? I don’t care,” Rubin said. “I just want the best one in each category.”

Mobile Phone Users get Connected-As for less

VoicePipes announced today the immediate availability of it's new Connected-As service for mobile phone users offering the nation's lowest cost for mobile-to-landline calling. Available at their Internet site www.Connected-As.co.nz, mobile calls to landlines cost just 29 cents. Mobile-to-mobile, no matter the carrier, are just 49 cents.

In announcing the new service, VoicePipes’ Managing Director Mark Sayer explained that Kiwis have been paying inflated mobile rates for too long and he was determined to help. Acknowledging the presence of new entrants 2degrees and Slingshot to the market, he stated that it still hadn't forced the major incumbent operators to lower their prices. “Call prices for both Vodafone and Telecom's new XT network, with a pre-paid plan, are a staggering 89 cents," states Mr Sayer. "These are some of the highest prices for like plans in the OECD.”

Cell Phone Calls Failed to Reach Wayward Pilots

Minneapolis airport police say controllers tried to contact the pilots of a wayward Northwest Airlines jetliner by radio, data message and cell phone after it failed to land as scheduled.

Federal officials are investigating how the San Diego-to-Minneapolis flight overshot the airport by 150 miles on Wednesday. The pilots have told authorities they were distracted by a heated conversation.

A police report released Friday identified the pilots as Timothy Cheney and Richard Cole. The report offers few new details about why they flew past the airport.

The three-page report says the pilots "were cooperative, apologetic and appreciative" and both voluntarily submitted to alcohol-breath tests. The tests found no evidence that the pilots were drinking.

New Software Threatens Privacy of Cell Phone Users

UNDATED—Cell phones are under attack by a flood of covert, internet software designed to use cell phones against their users by invading their privacy.

Hackers are working through relatively inexpensive programs that can be ordered online and allow anyone to gain access to the private conversations and messages of cell phone users. Such hijacking websites promise the user easy access to track a cheating spouse or anyone else. Experts say nearly all of today's cell phone spyware can be traced to China or Russia.

As NBC's Eric Mansfield reports it's easier than you may realize for someone to hack into your cell phone.

Beware of pricier mobile Internet data plans

Prices for cell phone voice services may be dropping, but consumers are likely to be forced to pay a lot more for mobile Internet data plans in the future.

It's no secret that the price of voice services for cell phones is falling. Just last week Sprint Nextel announced it was offering a new $69.99 a month, Any Mobile, Anytime plan that allows subscribers to call any cell phone in the U.S., regardless of the carrier, in addition to such things as unlimited text messaging and data services.

Analysts are predicting a price war in the mobile market as national wireless carriers will soon be forced to offer more minutes of voice service or unlimited voice services for equal or lower prices to compete with each other.

To make up for the shortfall in revenue, these analysts also predict that wireless operators will start reconfiguring Internet data service plans to make up the difference.

"Voice revenue is declining for the carriers," said Charles Golvin, an analyst with Forrester Research. "And the vision for the future is to use data revenue to make up for the shortfall and to kick ARPU (average revenue per user) into growth mode."

Data usage is already on the rise, and wireless operators are cashing in. For the second quarter of 2009, AT&T reported a 37.2 percent increase in wireless data revenue to $3.4 billion, more than double the total for the same period two years earlier. This usage included messaging, Internet access, access to applications and related services. Verizon Wireless said that its data revenue jumped to over 52 percent to $3.9 billion during the second quarter of 2009.

While text messaging is still a big component of data revenue, which carriers also charge a premium for, Web access is also on the rise. This growth is likely being driven by the sale of more smart mobile phones. Smartphone sales increased 27 percent in the second quarter of 2009, while total handset sales fell 6 percent, according to Gartner. But it's also due to the fact that more people want to do more things with their phones. CCS Insight concluded after a recent survey that the biggest drivers for Web use on mobile devices is accessing social networking sites like Facebook and microblogging sites such as Twitter.smart mobile phone

It's standard practice for wireless operators to require smartphone subscribers to sign up for a hefty flat fee for a data usage plan. AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile USA all require customers purchasing a smartphone to also get a data plan that costs $30 a month in addition to a selected voice plan, which typically starts around $40 a month. Sprint Nextel has been bundling its unlimited data service in its new Simply Everything plans. These data services are called unlimited, but each of them has capped usage at 5GB per month. After that, subscribers are usually charged extra fees.

Meanwhile, data packages for non-smartphones have been priced much lower. In addition, wireless operators have not required customers sign up for these plans for most of the data-capable feature-phones they sell. There are a few

For example, AT&T offers a $15 a month package for unlimited e-mail and mobile Web access for customers who have feature phones. T-Mobile charges $9.99 per month for unlimited Web access and e-mail on most of its non-smartphone devices.

New tiers of data service

But as the price of voice services falls, and more feature phones offer better Web-surfing capabilities, carriers are realizing that they need to create new tiers of service in the high-growth data service segment to make money.

"The trend that is inescapable is that carriers are trying to put more pricing tiers in place to offer a wider range of services," Forrester's Golvin said. "The model of paying a flat $30-a-month rate for data service on a high usage device like the iPhone is likely going away. Carriers are trying to find ways to introduce more tiers and more premium services."

The first indication that this trend is on its way, is Verizon's announcement last week that it is changing pricing on its non-smartphone data plans. The company introduced the new Samsung Rogue, a phone that is not considered a smartphone, but comes equipped with a QWERTY keypad and is able to access 3G data services. As part of the Rogue launch, Verizon changed its data pricing for non-smartphones, and said that customers who buy the Rogue will be required to purchase a $9.99 monthly data plan that provides 25 megabytes worth of data usage per month, or a $19.99 monthly data plan that offers 75MB of data. If customers go over these caps, they will be charged 50 cents per MB if they have the 25MB plan and 30 cents per MB if they subscribe to the 75MB plan.

Previously, Verizon Wireless subscribers who wanted to use a data service with their regular cell phone, would either pay $1.99 per kilobyte of data. Or they could sign up for Verizon's VCast VPak service for $15 extra a month to get access to video clips, sports highlights, news updates, and unlimited e-mail and mobile Web usage.

Now as part of Verizon's change, Rogue customers and all new data customers looking for a data service package for Web use will have to choose between the two offered packages. And if they want VCast video service, they will have to pay an additional $9.99 per month.

What this means is that subscribers will actually be paying more money for less data, since the retired VCast VPak service included unlimited e-mail and Web usage in addition to the video and music offered through VCast. It also means that feature phone users could also pay more for data than smartphone users if they go over their limits. Remember, the smartphone data service costs $30 a month extra for up to 5GB of data usage per month. Verizon is now charging its non-smartphone Rogue customers $10 for 25MB and $20 for only 75MB.

Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney confirmed the change in pricing. She also confirmed that Rogue customers will be required to sign up for one of the two plans. But she emphasized that today the new data plan requirement only applies to Rogue customers, and not to customers using other phones. She also said that the new pricing model would not affect customers already subscribing to the Vcast VPak plan.

But she did say that the data plan requirement along with the new pricing scheme will apply to other new phones that Verizon Wireless introduces in the future. But she declined to provide details as to what types of phones would require data plans.

"We will identify the (phones) that require a data plan," she said in an e-mail. "And we are not making anyone with a similar phone today purchase a plan. Regarding the requirement of a data plan with the Rogue, you have to have a data plan if you get that phone."

Verizon's justification for requiring the new data service plan with the sale of these phones is that it doesn't want customers to be upset if they rack up a big bill from data charges because they didn't realize they were using wireless data service.

What's your data usage?

Golvin admits that the usage cap on the lowest tier of service seems low. He postulates that subscribers of the 25MB plan will be able to check e-mail and access some Web pages each day without going over their limit. But he said that anyone uploading pictures or downloading big e-mail files will likely chew through that bandwidth quickly.

Meanwhile, he thinks the 75MB plan is likely to satisfy the daily needs of subscribers who frequently check e-mail and social-networking sites and use mobile search tools. But heavy users uploading pictures or video will have to be careful.

"The problem is that people know what a minute of voice is like," he said. "But they have no idea how much data they are using. Unless there is a clock that is running or fuel gauge that shows that you are down to half a tank in the first week of the month, users will have no idea they are going over their limit."

But consumer advocates believe that Verizon and other carriers are simply trying to lock subscribers into lengthy data contracts and are over-charging them for services that they may or may not use. For example, there are some smartphone users who say they'd rather forgo the $30-a-month data plan and only use the data services on their phones when they are in a Wi-Fi hot spot.

"This practice highlights once again the complete lack of transparency and the lack of logic that consumers face when they sign up for wireless data plans," Joel Kelsey, a policy analyst for Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports. "Anything that herds consumers into plans or into phones that offers them a lack of choice has been problem for a long time in the wireless market."

Meanwhile, the wireless industry contends that it is trying to offer consumers more choices. But the reality is that even though consumers may soon see lower voice pricing, it's very unlikely their monthly bills will decrease at all. And it's quite likely they will continue to rise.

"Anything that leads to higher bills for consumers is bad in the eye of the consumer," Golvin said. "So I am sure this will largely be perceived as a negative by consumers. But with more tiers of service, there could be more choices. And maybe cost-conscious consumers could find a right-sized plan at the right price for them."

China Mobile Is Unaware of Investment Plans for MTN Assets

China Mobile Phone Communications Corp. isn’t aware of a plan to seek a partner to acquire assets of South Africa’s MTN Group Ltd. as reported by the South China Morning Post, a spokeswoman at the company’s unit said.

China Mobile Phone has approached or plans to approach companies with a strong presence in Africa and the Middle East to team up with it in bidding for MTN’s businesses in Iran, Syria and Sudan valued at about $2 billion, the newspaper reported, citing people it didn’t identify.

The Chinese carrier is “not aware” of the investment plans reported by the newspaper, said Rainie Lei, a spokeswoman for Hong Kong-listed China Mobile Phone Ltd., the world’s largest mobile-phone carrier. China Mobile Phone continues to seek suitable overseas acquisition opportunities, Lei said.

China Mobile Phone Communications, the parent company, has said it is interested in investing in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. China Mobile Phone doesn’t have a specific target, President Wang Jianzhou said March 19. The company will consider taking controlling stakes and minority holdings in overseas carriers, and is “cautious” about acquisitions, according to Wang.

In 2007, China Mobile Phone Communications bought Pakistan’s Paktel Ltd., its first acquisition outside Chinese territory, for about $460 million.

The Beijing-based company had sought to acquire minority stakes in the MTN units on its own before the plan was rejected, according to the South China Morning Post. The phone carrier aims to be a junior partner in any deal, the English-language Hong Kong newspaper said.

Johannesburg-based MTN is Africa’s largest mobile-phone company.

China Unicom posts iPhone 3G images, specs

China Unicom did nothing to dispel rumors that it plans to be Apple's iPhone partner in China by posting images and specifications of the ciPhone 3G on Tuesday.

The details (in Chinese), spotted by IDG News Service, are perhaps the strongest sign that China's second-largest carrier has won the deal to supply the iPhone to the world's largest mobile phone market. At this point, some may wonder why China Unicom wouldn't just wait for the new iPhone that is almost universally expected to arrive sometime around the middle of this year, but Chinese media reports have suggested that China Unicom and Apple reached a breakthrough in their negotiations just last week, and China Unicom plans to launch a 3G network in May.

Apple and China Mobile phone, the country's largest carrier, have negotiated off and on for over a year about bringing the iPhone to China but have thus far failed to reach a deal. Part of the problem with the China Mobile talks was that the large carrier reportedly wanted some control over the App Store in China, as well as a version of the iPhone made to work with a homegrown 3G standard used only by China Mobile phone.

China Unicom has 130 million subscribers before which Apple can push the iPhone, as compared to AT&T's 77 million subscribers.

UPDATE 1-Nokia says has stopped using phone subcontractors

tops using subcontractors for phone making

HELSINKI, March 26 (Reuters) - Nokia (NOK1V.HE), the world's top mobile phone maker, has stopped using subcontractors in the assembly of its phones due to faltering demand for mobile handsets, a spokeswoman for the company said on Thursday.

"In engine making we have fully stopped (using subcontractors)," said a company spokeswoman, adding the firm was still using them in other functions like packaging or logistics.

In 2008 Nokia outsourced approximately 17 percent of the manufacturing volume of its mobile phone engines, which include the phone and software that enable its basic operations.

Nokia's key subcontractors have been Foxconn (2038.HK), China's BYD (1211.HK), Jabil Circuit (JBL.N) and Elcoteq (ELQAV.HE).

BYD shares slipped in afternoon trading in Hong Kong and were down 0.3 percent at 0815 GMT, even as the broader Hang Seng Index .HSI soared 3.6 percent.

Nokia said in January it aimed to cut annual costs at its key handset unit alone by more than 700 million euros to counter plunging demand. [ID:nLH416501]

The overall china cell phone market is expected to contract by about 10 percent this year, hurt as consumers rein in spending and handset sellers try to clear out unsold phones.

Shares in Nokia were 1.1 percent lower at 9 euros on a softer DJ Stoxx European Technology Index .SX8P.
